As I’ve not been appropriately exposed to decent movie-musicals, I was sceptical when a couple of friends suggested we go to see Sweeney Todd opening week. However, I gave (it was either Sweeney or Awake and I really didn’t want to spend my money and 2 hours of my time watching another Hayden Christensen movie) so the five of us assembled into the theatre to see Burton’s latest work. The film was actually quite while done (but then again, I do like Burton’s style) and, much to my surprise, I actually found myself to be thoroughly enjoying it; I even found that some of the songs were stuck in my head long after seeing the movie! While many (some of my friends included) found Burton’s use of unrealistic looking ‘blood’ to be amusing, I was impressed – the clearly fake look of the blood spilled in the movie gives the scenes an artistic feel. Overall, I feel Burton did a spectacular job turning this popular musical into a mainstream film from the casting right down to the details of setting and costumes of the characters. Unlike many films I’ve seen recently, it didn’t feel like it dragged on too long, but was riveting from start to finish!
