Ok, I think I finally convinced my dad to help me get more hardware power.  You see I got Medieval II Total War and it couldn't run with a steady framerate...even in lowest settings...so yeah my new PC isnt as tough as I thought.  My dad noticed it, and then I told him that I need a better graphics card.  I was thinking of getting the geforce 7900 gts but I thought I just upgrade now to DX10 instead of spending a few bucks on a 7900 now and then a few more on a DX 10 card.  What do you guys recommend me, upgrade to DX 10 now, or later?

Btw I take it I need Vista tu run DX10 stuff but I'll be getting it soon anyways

I would wait until later. I'm not a PC expert, but from what I heard it's not all it's cut out to be. But you do whatever you want.

You could probably wait until Crysis to make the Vista jump, you can buy a DX10 compatible card right now and it will still run great with current DX9 games out there, not only that but you'll find that DX9 games run better on XP than Vista, weird but true. Anyways, I recommend you wait untill the Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB has a price drop, then when Crysis is released you can upgrade to Vista and enjoy next gen PC goodness. You'll also find that with a fairly powerfull processor and the 8800, Medieval II runs very smooth.

Cheers!

As for the CPU I have an Intel Pentium D 945 3.40GHz 800MHz FSB 2x2 MB L2 Cache, is that good?

It's a good processor, but to fully enjoy next-gen PC you need to upgrade to a Athlon FX dual core or a much less expensive yet very good Intel Core 2 Duo (E6400, E6420, E6600 good performance, good price point) 2.4ghz or above.
