Bio

Sean Connery was born Thomas Sean Connery in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1930. To many moviegoers, he is and always will be the consummate James Bond.

He joined the British Navy as a teenager. Afterwards he worked in a variety of jobs such as truck driver, lifeguard and laborer. He placed third in the Mr. Universe bodybuilding contest. He tried out for a stage production of South Pacific, and eventually he began to land small television and film roles.

He appeared in such movies as Disney's Darby O' Gill and the Little People (1959). His career skyrocketed with Dr. No (1962), the first Bond film. He starred in six more Bond films, including the "unofficial" entry, Never Say Never Again (1983). The Bond role turned Connery into an internationally known celebrity.

After leaving the official Broccoli/Saltzman Bond series, he starred in a wide variety of films, including The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Wind and the Lion (1975), Robin and Marian (1976), Outland (1981), The Name of the Rose (1986), and Highlander (1986).

He won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Untouchables (1987).

He continued to star in successful movies well into his 60s. Some noteworthy examples are Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), The Rock (1996), and Entrapment (1999). The Rock could be interpreted as a sort of capstone to his career as James Bond. His character, John Mason, was a British secret service agent who had been imprisoned since the 1960s.

He has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Scottish National Party and the cause of Scottish independence from the United Kingdom.

Sean Connery received a knighthood in 2000, and a Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 2006.
