Abel and I were good friends for several years. He was my boxing trainer when he lived in Vertrees Kentucky. I used to spend my summers helping Abel on his farm. Abel and Janie divorced many years ago, and he moved back to California. Janie passed away not too long ago. From what I have been able to find out, he did indeed move back to Mexico. His last acting role was actually a bit part in the Kevin Bacon movie "Quicksilver". After that, he dropped off of the radar. A very gifted actor; tough, yet gentle; dutiful and compassionate, yet effortlessly showing a depth that draws the viewer in and makes them think. Mr. Fernandez was not just a character actor, but an actor that had character. Every role that I have seen him in has shown strength, sometimes outwardly, and sometimes just under the surface, but always present. He truly had that uniquely talented quality of being able to assert himself in scenes, stories, and plots without forcing his way in, or needing to "steal" anything from another actor. He definitely was way under appreciated, and that is a total shame!
