- Vladamir Malkin: "My son simply snapped, his nerves did not hold on. In the last moment, they persuaded him to stay in Magnitka, though his mind was already in the NHL. I understand him, but I don't support him. It was a childish act! Before I give my final assessment, I need to talk to him personally." Natalia Malkin: "We learned about everything from the news as well. We tried to call our son, but his phone was turned off. Money-wise, he was not any worse-off. He simply wanted to play in the NHL. But the management of Metallurg played on his patriotic feelings. He was not able to refuse. Though afterwards, he told me: 'Mom, but they [Penguins] have already been waiting for me, and I promised.' He left for the camp in Finland very disgruntled. I still feel that others use my son for their purposes."
- Sidney Crosby: (about Malkin) "It’s a pretty amazing story. I have been following it like everyone else. With him being so close to [agent] Pat Brisson and hearing what he went through is pretty unbelievable,” Crosby said. “He showed a lot of guts to go through that and come over here. I think everyone is just looking forward to having him here and make him feel as comfortable as possible."
“For anyone who has a dream to play [pro hockey] and the passion to play, this is the league you want to be in. For him, I think when you get that opportunity, you’ll do whatever it takes and take those risks to get here,” he continued. “It shows that he wants to be here. He went through a lot of adversity to get here, so when he does come, I think he is going to want it bad and want to play well and expect a lot out of himself. It’s only going to make everyone else around him better.”
- Sidney Crosby: (about Malkin playing for the Penguins) “I can’t wait. I played against him at the World Junior Championships and the most recent World Championships and have seen him play a lot. I am just looking forward to getting out there and hopefully learning from him, too. He is a great player and you can always learn things. I want to learn from him. Hopefully we can build some chemistry and make some things happen out there.”

But at the same time, there's got to be some pressure because otherwise a guy wouldn't sign a deal at 3 a.m. then disappear in a couple days. I'm assuming he's in the United States or some other country where he can wait."
- Gennady Velichkin (Head Of Mettalurg Magnitogorsk): "We're all in shock. They all like to talk about democracy, the American way and then they shamelessly steal our best players. This is pure sports terrorism!"
