The Lone Gunmen - Writer/Executive Producer Millennium - Creator/Writer/Executive Producer The X-Files - Creator/Writer/Director/Executive Producer The X-Files: Fight the Future - Co-writer/Producer The X-Files: I Want to Believe - Cowriter/Producer/Director Christopher Carl Carter (born October 13, 1956) is an American screenwriter, film director and producer, best known as the creator of The X-Files.

He was born in Bellflower, California to William and Catherine Carter. In college, he majored in journalism, graduating from California State University Long Beach in 1979. His brother, W. Craig Carter, is a Lord Foundation Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT.

Carter began writing for Surfing magazine out of college. For the next five years, he traveled around the world both as a freelance writer and as the magazine's associate editor.

A big break in his career came in 1985, when Jeffrey Katzenberg, then chairman of Walt Disney Studio Entertainment, read a screenplay he wrote and signed him to development with Walt Disney Pictures. While working with Katzenberg, Carter wrote and produced several television movies including pilots of Cameo By Night and The Nanny, an unsold pilot unrelated to the Fran Drescher sitcom. He co-produced the second season of the comedy series Rags to Riches. and in 1989 was creator and executive producer of a comedy series called Brand New Life for Disney's Sunday night lineup.

It happens I read criticism about that man, that are bad, which is at each taste, yet compared to other "TV writers". When you see the quality of what he runned, I barely understand how it's possible to compare what he did with shows like Buffy, or Roswell, or Mutant X, which, on the contrary of show like the X-Files and MillenniuM (one of the best quality i've seen on TV), cruelly lack visual qualities, and spirituality. I agree, these are teen shows, it's only the comparison that makes me, well, laugh. To me it's really not the same level, and not only in age bracket. I think, like the reviewers above, that he's a "One of the all-time greats", because he pushed what he did to the extreme possibility, in terms of quality, and also because he's a visionary. He can feel the world around, and smoothly radiates his unspoken magic and poetry through intelligent and well-licked stories and scripts. Maybe because he doesn't leave an inch to hazard; everything is thought, and, like a ghostly octopuss, he's here and there at the same time. There's the hard work. There's the genius. And this magic that comes from out there. What he did is different from what was before, and is still from what has been ever since. There has been tries to reproduce, or imitate, or be inspired by his work... But inspiration is something you cannot command, it's a gift, and the idea, as original as it can look in the beginning, or whether it's the same than something that was thought before, is nothing without the eye of the creator, and only one with the gift can make it shine colorful. I hope for the day I could read novels he wrote, and meet with the depth of an unshared work.

I am a hue fan of Chris's work. I love all of his TV show from the classic X Files to Millennium. Even the short lived Harsh Realm and Lone Gunmen were great, I think Chris is a great script writer. Lots of effort went into producing some for the best episodes ever written for any TV show. The plots Chris developed on the X Files are truely amazing this man is simply gifted and really work watching his work. Chris wrote a variety of episodes and his stories were never predictable i really think this man is great. He definatly should make another TV show he's been away for too long.
