Edward Burns, an actor born and raised in New York, is a writer, director, and producer of independent films. He was born in Woodside, Queens County, New York on January 29, 1968. He attended Catholic Chaminade High School and The State University of New York at Albany. He then majored in English Literature at Oneonta College in New York before transferring to Hunter College in New York City to study filmmaking.
After graduation, he made some short films while working at a local news outlet. Among his shorts were Hey Sco! and Brandy which was screened at the 1992 Independent Feature Film Market. In 1995, Edward's film directorial debut The Brothers McMullen was completed in eight months with a budget of $25,000 and grossed over $10 million at the domestic box office. It also won the Grand Jury prize at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival.
The critical acclaim he received in this event solidified his status as a bright young independent filmmaker in the US. Edward and his brother Brian own the Irish Twins production company. Aside from independent filmmaking, Burns also appears in television shows and other movies not produced by him.
Burns lives with wife Christy and their two children in New York City.
