Director who has brought an impressive visual flair to TV and several feature films. After graduate work at the London Film School, he directed documentaries, commercials, and a short film, Juanpuri (1970), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes. Back in the United States, he worked as a writer on several TV dramas before receiving acclaim (and a cowriting Emmy) for the TV movie The Jericho Mile (1979), which he also directed. Mann made his feature debut as writer and director of Thief (1981), a stylish look at a professional thief (played by James Caan), and followed with the murky WW2 drama The Keep (1983). He returned to TV as executive producer of "Miami Vice" (1984-89), a slick cop series that redefined the way TV looked and sounded. He brought some of that same "high style" to his next feature, Manhunter (1986), a gripping thriller that was a precursor to Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs based on a Thomas Harris novel. After producing the TV series "Crime Story," Mann cowrote and directed The Last of the Mohicans (1992), a beautifully detailed adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's novel that, in true Mann fashion, became a visceral epic. He also executive produced The Band of the Hand (1986).
