Alejandro González Iñárritu is quickly setting higher standards for Mexican film-makers, who, before Iñárritu, were releasing very poor material, but of course, that was before Iñárritu struck gold with "Amores Perros" ("Love's a B*tch in some English-speaking markets), a really incredible film, specially from a newcomer, who showed through three distinct stories linked by a car accident the hard times in Mexico City. That movie, along with his next works: "21 Grams" and "Babel" shows an inovative narrative style that have been the signature of Iñárritu, this style, known as "portmanteau film" or "anthology film", gives his three stories a lot of mistery and forces the watcher to think and to try to "make the puzzle", making the films more satisfying when they're understood and showing what kind of an artist he is. His stories also show a great character development and great performances making people to feel empathy with the characters in their search for redemption, search masterfully showed in 21 Grams, Iñárritu's second film.
Simply, this director is showing tons of promise, getting academy nominations for his first two films and winning an award in Cannes for best direction for his still unrealeased third film "Babel", film that I can't wait to see. Not bad for a former DJ.
