In 1996, he won the back-to-back Cable ACE Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his participation in The Larry Sanders Show.
In 1983, he was nominated for best supporting actor for his participation in "Cross Creek."
He is the commissioner of the Extreme Dodgeball League.
In January 2004 and in December 2006, Rip was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
During the filming of his movie "Maidstone", Torn struck director and star Normal Mailer in the head with a hammer three times and Mailer bit Rip's ear. The fight is featured in the movie and the blood you see during that scene is real.
He was married three times, the first, Geraldine Page (with who he had 3 children), Anne Wedgeworth (with who he had 1 child) and his present wife, Amy Wright, with who he has 2 children.
He won a $475,000 suit against actor Dennis Hopper after comments made by Hopper on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno". When Dennis appealed again, another judge dubled the fine.
Rip turned down the role of George Hanson in "Easy Rider", so Jack Nicholson played it instead.
Rip was a close friend of George Peppard.
Rip has seven children.

He is the Godfather of actor Clay Liford.
He's a cousin of actress Sissy Spacek.
