Quotes
- Ashton: (on his high school years) At the time I was smoking a lot of weed and partying. I woke up many mornings not knowing what I'd done the night before. I'm amazed I'm not dead.
- Ashton: I’m continually trying to make choices that put me against my own comfort zone. As long as you’re uncomfortable, it means you’re growing.
- Ashton: (on enjoying talking about films with his wife Demi Moore's ex-husband Bruce Willis) Bruce was spending a long weekend with us and I asked him something that had been bugging me since I'd seen Superman Returns. I said, 'How the f**k was Superman lifting up that kryptonite island?' Bruce agreed, it made no sense.
- Ashton: (on aging) I look at my father and I'm probably physically stronger than my father and I can probably do a hell of a lot more push-ups and pull-ups, but I still look at my dad and I know he could whip my ass. He could crush me with one word if he wanted to, but he could also just take me out, and that's the kind of power Kevin [Costner] also has. I might be able to swim a little bit faster than he could, but I know he could whip my ass if he wanted.
- Ashton: (on Kevin Costner‘s role in “The Guardian“) I think it takes a lot of courage as an actor to play the role that Kevin does in this movie. When you play the mentor and you're not playing the mentee anymore, you're admitting something about yourself and it's courageous to admit that. A lot of actors are trying to hold onto their youth and I admire Kevin for (not doing) that. There are a lot of guys much older than Kevin who still wouldn't subject themselves to playing the mentor in the movies. I think it holds them back.
- Ashton: (on how he and Demi balance their personal and professional lives) It's difficult. We get put on location to do a film and we're in Louisiana, for example. Well, my girls (Demi's children Rumer, 18, Scout, 15, and Tallulah Belle, 12) are in school in LA. I'm not going to pull them out of school and my wife is there, too, and now I'm somewhere else. So how are you going to manage that? It's not easy. It's three months at a time, it's a big chunk of time.
- Ashton: (on making a bet with friends over Jennifer Aniston) Yeah, that I'd go on a date with her. I was in a basement in Iowa hanging out with my buddies, I was probably 17 or 18, and I bet a buddy $1000 that I would some day go on a date with Jennifer Aniston. She was married to Brad Pitt at the time, so I asked his permission to ask her and he said, "Yeah, it's cool, go ahead. I'll film it." So I said, "Okay, great." So we had a date set up at Pizza Hut and then it came time to pull it off and she didn't want to go. Like, I was serious, and I think she thought I was joking. I don't know. I definitely was serious.
- Ashton: (asked what the most courageous thing he's done in his life) You always try to think of something heroic of that nature but I don't find relevancy in that for me. I think it takes real courage to share your emotions and share your weaknesses and expose yourself, your wounds, to another person. So that is probably the most difficult thing I've ever had to do, just really share my emotional baggage and wounds with another individual.
- Ashton: I read something yesterday that said, "It's not what you achieve, it's what you overcome." And I think that there's a value in having those obstacles put in your way and there's a value in reaching for the next rung on the ladder. My desire is to always reach for that next rung in the next role and have the next one be better and be the best work I've ever done.
- Ashton: (on swimming in The Guardian) I trained for eight months before the movie ever started. I had to look like I was the best of the group. Then I see who the other guys are, and they're Olympic swimmers! I said to the director, "You can't do that to me, man!" I had to ask the Olympic swimmers to take a notch off--I mean, I'm supposed to win this thing! But they were very helpful and showed me how to swim better and they elevated my game and made me better.
- Ashton: (On preparing for being in the water for 10-hour spells while shooting The Guardian) You can't really prepare for it; you just grin and bear it. It just made all the scenes where all we had to do was act really nice. Scenes where we weren't wet and cold made the acting easier.
- Ashton: (On his relationship with Demi) I hope the love we share can resonate around the world so someday I can hear its echo.
- Ashton: (On his good-natured, happy-go-lucky personality) I'm happy wherever I go, whatever I do. I'm happy in Iowa, I'm happy here in California.
- Ashton: (On growing up in Iowa) I'm from Iowa, we don't know what cool is!
- Ashton: I'll probably never be the best actor in Hollywood, but I hope to be the hardest working.
- Ashton: I want to be like Tom Cruise from The Outsiders and go on and do amazing movies for a long time.

- Ashton: I am only young once, who cares if I'm a goofball!
- Ashton (on Demi and Bruce Willis' kids): If I had a daughter that was of my blood, I wouldn’t love her any more than I do those three.
- Ashton: I don't believe that old cliche that good things come to those who wait. I think good things come to those who want something so bad they can't sit still."
- Ashton: I didn't even know guys modeled before that. I thought Fabio was the only male model, and I really didn't fit that bill."
- Ashton (on Demi in G.I. Jane): I like G.I. Jane, but I didn't think she was hot in it.
- Ashton (on matching clothes with Demi): I'll go, 'So you're wearing brown?' Then I know I’ve got to either for a brown or khaki suit. You could go navy too. If she's wearing black, you just wear black. Matching is not her job; it's yours. You're the purse. If she feels good, you're going to have a good night.
- Ashton (talking about The Butterfly Effect (2004)): I thought that it was a fantastic metaphor for life, and pretty enlightening. And I appreciated the opportunity to play a character that's blind to the trauma that takes place in his life. The violence that is in the movie I thought was a fantastic metaphor for how blind we are as a society, and as a people, to the things that actually do happen on a day to day basis, and how we kind of just block them out. And whether it be through our media or whatever, we go 'Oh, it's not happening in my world, so it's not happening.' In the movie there's a great representation of the violence with the kids, and the pedophilia, and these kind of things that the guys could have taken the easy road, and kind of squeamishly cut around, but they weren't afraid of it.
- Ashton (jokes): Modelling is the best because you have to look hot, which comes easy to me, you know. I'm blessed with that.
- Ashton: I say whatever I think and whatever is on my mind, and I just hope that it comes out good. I just try to have a lot of fun.
- Ashton: I'm a guy's guy. I don't comb my hair unless I have to, and I don't use lotions or fancy shampoos.
- Ashton (On rapper Eminem and his music): I think he's got [guts] for saying what he said. People get way too worked up about that stuff instead of just enjoying it.
- Ashton (On his experience with James Van Der Beek and Rachael Leigh Cook on the set of Texas Rangers (2001)): In between scenes, we go up and play Nintendo 64. We just all hang out and have a good time.
- Ashton: I say whatever I think and whatever is on my mind, and I hope it comes out good. I just try to have a lot of fun.
