I almost missed this movie when it was on at the cinema, but I am so glad I caught it...saw it in a screen in the middle of the week-day, with only three other people in the room. Anybody with a love and knowledge of cinema should appreciate this....

I almost missed this movie when it was on at the cinema, but I am so glad I caught it...saw it in a screen in the middle of the week-day, with only three other people in the room. Anybody with a love and knowledge of cinema should appreciate this. I’m not normally a fan of romantic films, but I appreciate a good one when I see it, and I love when films break convention. I should state off the bat that just because a film dares to break convention, doesn’t make it good, but I do enjoy art movies and foreign films, much less profit driven than Hollywood.
So, this is an art film essentially. This film plays about with the romantic comedy in a unique, indie fashion. For a start it utilises a fractured chronology, the film flicks back and forth (Yet somehow, amazingly, not confusingly) over the course of 500 days, and it uses this to reflect the themes of the film that are again so different from a typical rom-com, almost a neo-rom-com. This is not a typical formula for the genre, nor is it shown in the typical (chronological) order. I don’t want to ruin the experience by going into more detail, but it is open-ended and satisfying in ways that don’t guarantee everything and everyone wrapped up in a neat little Hollywood- style bow.
In terms of performances, the characters feel lived in. Zooey Deschanel, is so experienced in the indie, and the rom-com and it shows, because she has no problem combining the two. She can easily hold her comedic own with the best of them. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a bit less experienced, but seems born for this kind of movie, I totally forgot about his role in ‘GI Joe’. Supporting characters are what they are, strong support for two strong leads.
One of my favourite things about the film is its natural visual quality. It is a beautiful film. Split-screen, vivid colour, black and white, transition into a literal drawing, animation spliced with live-action (in a fantastic scene that briefly dips its toes into the musical genre), and more.
The music is an upbeat soundtrack that I immediately downloaded, and is exactly what you would expect from an indie film, so expect the unexpected...the unheard of, independent from the film, catchy tracks. I heard someone say that indie films have the best soundtracks, and maybe with the exception of Tarantino, I’m inclined to agree.
I really want to keep the film a virgin experience for those that haven’t seen it, but I think I’ve touched on the key elements (direction, look, music, performances, and style), so all that’s left is for you to go see it. Go see ‘(500) Days of Summer’, see it, think about it, take it in, enjoy it.

One of the best openings in a romantic comedy I have ever seen. Not really a part of the story but I liked it.

A breath of fresh air? Something different? Offbeat? Overused though they fit. But like the movie, let's not put labels on it. It is what it is and what it is, is a charming little tale of love, heartbreak, acceptance and the rebound. It's a romantic comedy, about a boy and a girl who, don't fall in love with each other. It's funny and charming. Cute. Those are the words that best describe this movie. It is hard not to put labels on things. It is just human nature, an attempt to introduce some order. However, as our guy, Tom finds out the hard way, everything is just coincidence, a sequence of random incidents that shape our life the way it turns out.

Oh and Zooey Deschanel is gorgeous. I think she was the perfect choice. She's the only reason I got this movie but I'm glad I did.

On a personal note, the movie was sometimes a bit confusing for me due to it's non-linear narrative. But it has enough spunk to keep you entertained. What are movies for anyway?
