Baby Mama is this year's biggest surprise. I walked into this film expecting it to be trash, but came out really happy from the really strong acting and a really funny screenplay. Tina Fey and Amy Phoeler have non-stop chemistry on screen, and are both really good here. Fey stars as Kate, a 38 year old woman who aspires of becoming a mother. When a doctor informs her that her chances of getting pregnant are one in a million, she decides to seek a surrogate. What Kate wasn't expecting on her plate is the handful Angie, played really well by Phoeler. The two first are at odds with each other but eventually become buds. The film is at times predictable, but then there are some darker elements here that weren't as predictable. All in all I did basically know what was going to happen even as dark as it was for a very light comedy. I also really liked the performance from Romany Malco as the doorman. He takes on the role of kind of being the funny and likable doorman who occasionally pops in from scene to scene to give advice. These are some really likable characters who you can actually care about. The romance between Kate and Rob, played strongly by Greg Kinnear, is nice, the relationship between Kate and Angie is like the equivalent of a great buddy film for women. The ending was a little too fairytale-ish for me but I had a great time at this film and I hope people will check it out in theaters or rent it when it comes out on DVD.

Baby Mama is one of those movies where you liked it, but nothing really sent it over the top to being a really great movie. the movie has its funny parts, but it is not non-stop hilarity, and the plot is good, but way too predictible. I don't like a totally random plot, but some kind of twists puts me more on the edge of my seat and makes the movie more interesting. This movie did not really do too much of that.
3 1/2 stars.

Baby Mama isn't nonstop hilarious, like Forgetting Sarah Marshall or The 40 Year Old Virgin, but it's sporadically very funny, whether it's Amy Pohler doing her white trash best or a brief but hilarious Steve Martin cameo. It starts out kind of slow, but soon becomes a damn funny comedy for the most part, even if it isn't first rate.

I have seen a lot of movies and there have been none that have left me speechless.. until this movie. What surprises me even more is that this is the #1 movie the week it comes out. Fey plays an executive who catches baby fever. She wants a baby badly but cannot have one. She comes up with the idea of paying for a surrogate to have her baby. In comes poehler as the surrogate. There is where the comedy begins. Poehler does not look a day over 50 and she is playing the surrogate. Of course her character is poor white trash and fey plays the stuck up lady who likes everything done a certain way. She then meets kinnear and romance ensues. To say that this movie is predictable is an understatement. There are some scenes that are funny but you have already seen them because they are in the commercial. Due to the fact that there are not hardly any comedies I can see why people are going to see this movie. It is pretty bad with most of the badness focusing on poehler. This is a pretty bad movie which should be skipped at all costs.
