This is a fantastic and deeply different movie. It portrays the daily routine of the monks of Chartreux, or the Carthusians. The director shows what the monks do all day, no more and no less. Most of the film occurs in the near-total quiet to which the title refers. Almost the only things you will hear are when someone opens a book, has to fix something, or goes to prayer. The footage of the mountains is gorgeous. We see one of the elder monks make new vestments-- and he doesn't even mutter to himself, the way we might do when carrying out some small task. It is only when you shut off everything unnecessary about your surroundings that you realize there used to be so much noise. To the Carthusians, what remains is far more worthwhile-- the inner life with God.
