The only reason peeps complain about this not bein a horror flick is cause Marshell directed it, but he NEVER even hinted that it would be.

Instead, we are treated to an action packed postapocalyptic sci-fi filled with small in jokes and just pure awesomeness.

While a lil overedited for Marshell's typical style, the FX are amazing well done (including one of the most over-all disturbing cannibalism scenes in recent film). Where other films that had inspired this one (like Escape from New York, Roadwarrior, A Boy and His Dog, etc) would turn the camera from the more graphic/bloody scenes, or kinda skip over them... Doomsday relishes in bringing these darkest corners of the future to light in all their bloody detail... Any fan of the sub-genre will def appreciate this gritty take.

This is a great film, from the trailers and the previews it was very clear this wasn't going to be a horror film, but instead an homage to the 80's cult classic action/adventure film, and that is clearly what it is, it borrows from these films...

A very well done homage that all of those cult classic action/adventure film directors from the 80's can be proud of as it continues on the tradition of those films.

A lot of horror fans have found a respect for writer/director Neil Marshall, as he has brought us two great horror films, Dog Soldiers and The Descent. So when we all hear news that Neil Marhsall is doing yet another horror movie, we got really excited. Doomsday tells about a killer virus called "The Reaper", in which swept over Scotland sometime in the future. The army built up a giant wall around Scotland to keep people out and in, but the virus ended up spreading some 30 years later, and a supposed cure is held up inside the wall. A task force is sent in to retrieve it, but they found something worse then they bargained for. Doomsday is sort of a bunch of movies combined, for example Mad Max and 28 Weeks Later. It takes place in sort of a post apocalyptic future, so director Neil Marshall had come up with a gang sort of, reminding me of the punk scene of the 70's and 80's with their tattoos, piercings and leather attire. This is one thing the movie did a good job with, was the basic make up and clothing design. Most of the characters have crazy hair designs like mohawks, spikes and such. Their clothing and piercing also range in strangeness, as theyre noses, cheeks, ears, nipple, belly buttons and more are pierced in strange fashions. Marshall always does a grea job with all of the gore effects in his movies. Doomsday is certainly bloody, as this future is rough. At the beginning of the movie, we get some pretty gory gunshots which cause many splatters around the environment. Also in the beginning, we get a great moment where a man gets his head blown in half with a shotgun and it is really cool just to watch that gag on screen. After that, we get more stabbings and cuts, mostly with some blood sprays. The end chase though is absoulutely covered in blood, as we get men being run over and rammed by vehicles, leaving a bloody mess behind. Now, lets get to some of the negative things about the movie. First off, I cant really say that this movie is original in any way, cause basically it seems that Neil Marshall just threw together a bunch of elements from other movies to creat Doomsday. The plot is also very confusing and bland, because theyre are so many plot holes its hard to follow the film. The script and basic directing also lack here, as the script is to simple for me and the directing is too edited for me to fully enjoy it. Doomsday is simply stupid fun, full of gore and action, the movie was enjoyable. Though I think it it underrated, it still is not as good as proposed.

The Good: Great Cinematography, Exellent stunts and action secquences.

The Bad: Too much Blood and Gore, They curse in almost every sentence and the concept is unoriginal and used before.

The virus disappears but then suddenly a few years later they realize there are survivors. Then all of a sudden the virus comes back so they have to send a team in to bring a survivor back. If this story sounds familar its because you have seen this movie before. The only difference is there is no snake plissken in it. This movie is a blatant rip off of escape from new york. There is a little difference in that there is a team sent in as opposed to one person. The survivors have 2 bosses and both rule their worlds differently. I have to say that the acting is ok here as is the action. The gore is definately overdone. When someone gets shot the blood and guts shoot all over the screen. The end suddenly turns into a mad max homage down to the actual look of one of the bosses. Not to say that this is a bad movie but there is nothing really original here. Its like they did a remake of escape and added mad maxx for the ending. I think this is a movie that is really worth a dvd rental.

  In terms of story, "The Descent" and Doomsday are as different as two genre films can be, but the falloff in artistic quality is still quantifiable. Where "The Descent" was a slow, quiet, exquisitely modulated, startlingly original film, Doomsday is frenetic, loud, wildly imprecise and so derivative that it doesn't so much seem to reference its antecedents as try on their famous images like a child playing dress-up. Homage without innovation isn't homage, it's karaoke.
