I thought this was a very good movie that i enjoyed all the way threw and it never had a dull moment in it.

The movie flowed wonderfully and the cinematography was great. However the lead was not able to support the movie and that fell to Kevin Costner to pick up the slack. Overall it was a fun movie to watch, but the acting left room for improvement.

21 is a young sexy story of struggling MIT student Ben, played by Jim Sturgess who just came back to planet Earth after his really bad trip Across the Universe. Ben is a wiz kid whose good with numbers, practically unbelievably good. When his proffessor Mickey Rosa, played excellently and villainously by Kevin Spacey, sees Ben's gift he knows that he'll be good on a top secret Blackjack Team. Ben is reluctant to join but eventually gives in knowing he needs the money. When they reach Vegas you are glued to this movie just as you're glued to the even better book entitled Bringing Down the House. Ben eventually gets full of himself and screws up and runs into Laurence Fishbourne, only adding to the great performances throughout this film. The very last shot of that movie was a little too much of a cloche but the rest is pure genius. This film does a great job of capturing the neon and pure sex of Vegas. I loved the movie almost as much as I loved the book. some really great stuff, especially Kevin spacey in his best role in a quite a few years.

Kevin Spacey disappoints me lately with his choices of roles. A somewhat interesting subject (Blackjack and casino scamming) gets drowned under problematic casting (Kate Bosworth) and cheap characterizations. At least Lawrence Fishburne did a pretty fine job as a security agent.

It was a slow movie week in Auckland and the only thing that looked good that I hadn't already seen was "21". It’s the story of some M.I.T math geeks who learn a system to count cards and win big in blackjack and go to Las Vegas to make lots of money, get greedy, lose it all and learn a lot about themselves in the process.

I found the movie dubious from an ethical point of view and the ending had me conflicted as to how I felt about the main character and whether I was really on his side or thought he was just a prick While the world of card counting blackjack players sounds like something interesting, I suspect the nature of the whole card counting thing done by math uber geeks is a little beyond the reasonable comprehension of us mere mortals and the films attempts to dumb it down in such a way for us to appreciate what was going on left me feeling no more enlightened than when I started.

All in all, it was pleasant enough way to pass a couple of hours. Three stars.
