I found this movie quite astounding. I knew absolutely nothing of Edith Piaf before walking into the theatre, and I walked out crying for her tragic life.

Born and brought up in the most appalling circumstances of poverty, Edith's gift shone - she was truly put on this earth to share her talent. Although the movie itself is a little hard to follow because it is extremely disjointed in its story telling, this form of direction made sense given the tumultous life that Edith led. Furthermore, the ultimate value in the movie is the absolutely exceptional performance of Marion Cotillard - who completely immerses herself, body and soul, into the character of Edith Piaf.

Having looked a little at Piaf's life since seeing the movie - I am still astounded by Cotillard's performance. I truly hope that she gets an Oscar nomination for her role - although, given how far away the Acadamy Awards are, it is hard to know.

All the supporting characters were excellent, I got a feel of how long they suffered in the 'service' of Edith, yet I imagine she was the sort of person who was virtually impossible to live without, once you had spent time with her.
Her life right through to her death was high highs and exceptionally low lows - her death was quite drawn out and you get the sense that she fought against all odds to stay alive. The significance of her song No Regrets - Non je ne regrette rein was beautifully depicted at the end.
Overall, I really liked this film, and will probably buy it when it is released, just because of how good Cotillard's performance is. I recommend it to you all.
