This was a decent movie....if you've never heard of Hannibal Lechter. I have read the books and I blame the author for losing base with his character. Hannibal Lechter is supposed to be a super human who uses other people as his playthings and, of course, food. This revenge plot makes no sense for how he turns out.

After watching a few minutes of this movie I kept saying to myself..Please no more.. Please.. Stop.. Whenever a movie goes into a third sequel there is a problem and when a movie releases a prequel there is definately a problem. This movie is a prequel to silence of the lambs and it tells the story of hannibal lecter and how he became what he is. To say that this movie is confusing is an understatement. There is no explanation why hannibal has a german accent living in russia and when we see him later on he has an australian accent. Oh well lets forget that. The story is of how as a child some evil men during the war capture him and his sister as kids. They end up eating his sister to survive and hannibal ends up getting revenge. The fact that all the men live in the same area and he can pick them off one by one is not explained. The fact that his uncle marries an oriental girl is never explained. There are soooo many holes in this script that you can drive a truck through them. Of course when they want to hide those holes they tend to go over the top with the gore. Its become common place in hollywood that they tend to cover up bad scripts with gore and silliness and boy does this movie have both. The acting in this movie is horrible highlighted by the main actor who plays hannibal. To say he is bad is an understatement. He chews up scenery with the best of them and when you have him and Gong li talking its hard to understand what each of them is saying. Yes this movie is bad and shameless in trying to capitalize on the hannibal fame. It is not worth a viewing. Try to keep your idea of hannibal lecter the one you see in silence of the lambs and let this poor movie go away.

This character wasn't what I had come to expect from Hannibal. Maybe it was because the previous Hannibal vehicles were reflections of a much more mature Lecter? Maybe they were just written better? Maybe it was because they were Anthony Hopkins?
I don't know. What I do know, is that this story is simply a story of revenge, twisted, confused, distorted. Perhaps Thomas Harris was making a statement about the nature of revenge? Again I don't know. And since this not a site to ponder the philosophical meanings behind the themes of film, I have to assume that it doesn't matter.
What does matter is that the story is weak. The characters shallow, self absorbed, and full of failure before they even enter the scene. Even Lecter, is lost, confused, destroying himself slowly. He's hardly the genius we've come to 'love' as the anti-hero. Instead I found myself sickened by his depravity and lack of consciousness.
If you've read any of my reviews I hold a particular space for the paining of women and children, it is very hard for me to watch without getting sick, so I'm sorry, but that effects my review.

Well the parts that I really enjoyed were the parts where he kills people. It was a long movie and for the fact that Anthony Hopkins made a better Hannibal than this kid did is a bonus. It was really not better than the other Hannibal movies and this was just a waste of time watching. But i guess if you want to figure out how Hannibal became how he was, then I guess it's essential to the series.
