This is a dark film about the search for spirituality and the dwindling pain of a world slowly going mad. Does the story teach us about the sensations of negative light in the face of losing faith? As Ingmar Bergman is famous for he lays out a slow tranquil scene and slowly unwinds this tale of ennui and loss. It is a sad terrible story. In the end you wonder about the sanity of the poor lost priest. Is he the one that we should feel the worse for? His chance at love? His chance at salvation? Or are we to feel for the loss of the others? We gain little hope for the characters. Everyone ends the way they begin. Highly recommend this beautiful movie.
