There are films that not only touch our hearts, but teach us something about humanity, and if we are lucky offer us a view into the cultures and traditions of societies we are not familiar with. Water is a love story, told through the eyes of a collection of widows, whom, in India in the 1930's were socially outcast, believing that their lives were irrovocatably connected to that of their husbands. When the husbands die, so to do the wives. Where they live out the rest of their days in widow villages.
A young girl, put into an arranged marriage, losses her new husband before she knows what happens. Her story, and the story of two other widows, leads us to thinking about the stereotypes not only of our own cultures, but those cast systems that defeat humanity everywhere.
A beautiful social piece, drawn slowly with clean tools. The color and cinematography are clean and well placed. Especially the drab use of grays and soft whites until the joy near the end, with all the beautiful color.
A tragic love story, well worth the rental.
