This is one that might have passed some of you by. I hadn't even heard much about it when I went to see it. It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like; another horror film squeezed in with all the rest of the horror movies that seem to be so popular right now. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite measure up to the rest of the pack.
You've heard it many times before. A family has just moved into the weird old house that's been vacant for years and strange things start happening. The elements of originality that try to seperate this film from the all the others include a father who suffers from a disease that makes him have occasional bouts of insanity, as well as strange, ghost-like children hiding in the shadows at night stealing colored pencils.
Eventually we learn that the plan is to have seven children sacrificed by people who love them, and the last boy needed happens to be a member of the main family.
Throughout the first half of the film, it shows promise. Not much is revealed too soon and the creepy moments are handled relatively well. Then things start falling apart. You realize the movie is 75% over and we still don't know what's going on. When the main scheme is revealed, it is shallow and not very fulfilling. I never understood why these children were being sacrificed. What's the point? We may never know. It's disappointing, because Darkness has some very good pieces but they never come together to make anything coherant, making the last 20 minutes of the film a big mess.
This one should be skipped. I'm glad I saw it for only $0.50 and not $8. If your going to release a horror flick at the same time as ten others, then you'd better step up to the plate and deliver. I get the feeling that Darkness could've been a lot better, but it just doesn't go anywhere that makes sense.
