My favorite 2006/07 movie.Colorful and lively, very interesting and suspenseful. One of Almodóvar's best!!!

The plot of this movie is very good. I would think that it is the plot that carries this whole movie. It's twisty and unique, and although, it deals with very moral subjects, you don't feel like the characters are villains. In fact, there is a sense of justice and maybe even a little hope, because maybe they will get their lives back. The mother makes that clear when she talks of purgatory.
As for P. Cruz. I think she is very talented, sure. And pretty, that doesn't hurt, because she can smile or change her face and draw me in. But there were a couple of moments in this movie where she was seriously out of her depth: talking to fast, talking to loud. I had a couple of serious moments where I thought that maybe she didn't know the part or maybe it was the first day of shooting or something.
Overall though, she does convince me of her part, I get there in the long run, especially when it comes to dealing with the husband and her sister.
Lola Duenas, on the other hand, does an exceptional job, I believed her from that very first moment. She's sort of a sad little person isn't she? And the writing offers her a very 2-dimensional character, but Ms. Duenas does give her some depth and it would have been nice to see a little more of her underside.
Over all this is very good movie. Direction is excellent, Mr. Almodovar has a fine touch and a supple eye. He's gifted. Hope he makes a million more like it.

Another great movie from Almodovar enhanced with the presence of Penelope Cruz. She was superb in action and the cast was well chosen also. It's not really the kind of movie I usually watch but I liked it... a lot.
