A so-so Rom/Com, a so-so Drama/Comedy, and a so-so straight Comedy. It is so middle of the road in so many regards that it almost doesn't warrant a review. Any review of a million other movies of this caliber would suffice.
That said: the plot is painfully obvious, as it should be, because it is a Romantic Comedy on some level, and we're suppose to like the main characters. This includes believing in their sense of honor and morality. Meaning; moral decisions become rote ideals. But, this is the only attribute of the fabled Rom/Com it follows. It is missing the most important element: the characters falling in love. The Romantic angle is almost swept under the rug, apart from some dancing, and getting paint-balled, there is almost nothing to the reason's why the main character would believe in the other – that is, apart from it being written in the script.
Robin Williams proves that he still has plenty of raw horsepower and effective use of the language. How much of that was his own material? I don't know, but it had his feel and it was nice to see him allowed to talk and express himself like his older days, versus that travesty they tortured him with in RV.
A lot of big names in this movie, including the endear able Christopher Walken. The man makes every line sound like he's on Elizabethan stage. What a genius.
Laura Linley does a very good job with what she is given. It must be hard to be a love interest and be interested in when the scenes are almost devoid of reason to be interested.
Jeff Goldblum's little rant on Election day is some of the best work he's done. Concise, emotional (albeit negative), and well done.
Overall this is a weak showing, because the plot and substories are very empty of meaning or well versed dialog / purpose. You won't really be missing much, expect for the comedy of Robin Williams.
Not a good date movie as the love story is almost a cough, seemingly written in after the original story started shooting.
