The first thing that calls attention is the beautiful cinematography and camera work on this film....It's breathtaking! It is one of the best love stories of recent years, it must be. Beautifully shot, well acted and carefull done. Not a cliché film at all, it has many interesting details that drive it away from typical love stories, making it an outstanding feature. The soundtrack fits it very nicely.

I saw this movie on Hawaiian Airline's little rented media thingy. That said this movie should be seen on the big screen. The locations and scenery were splendid. Somerset Maugham's stories are always beautiful gems. I have read a lot of his short stories and I am always transported to a different place and time.
I think that Naomi Watts and Ed Norton did a wonderful job. Toby Jones as Waddington helped make it work. I think Somerset Maugham is kind of the Waddington character. He often writes himself into his stories.
