Instead of focusing almost exclusively on gratuitous sex and gore like the first film, this movie takes the time to develop the characters and the story and occasionally takes a break from being cruel and depraved to just have fun with itself.

'Hostel' was not a great film by any means. It had lots of great, realistic, graphic, and disturbing violence and gore, an very original plot and built up a really creepy atmosphere that was, in a way, genuinely terrifying - but it was also an intensely flawed movie. It was morally offensive in parts, the characters weren't that likable, the plot, while very original, had holes, had parts that weren't developed properly and all in all just really wasn't that realistic at all.

'Hostel Part 2', is also not a great film, and a much less gory one at that, but it is still a good film and much better than the first. They realized what did and what didn't work in the first film, and sticked solely to what did work and even built on that. I found the first film mostly just a standard horror film whose only purpose was to scare and shock, but 'Hostel Part 2', whose purpose is still primarily to do just that, focused a whole lot more on the characters, developed the plot so much better, and just in general, showed a greater respect for the plot and the audience.

Both films aren't great, but they are worth watching; they feature the most graphic violence ever seen in such a mainstream horror film - but if you were going to buy one or the other,and wanted just a little bit more than a standard gore-fest, I recommend buying this film. If it's cheap, that is.

To those who’ve seen Hostel 2, picture the movie with a heterosexual heroine and a suave, smooth-talking Slovakian “recruiter.� Would it have made a difference? No. Not only did it not make sense, it was completely worthless. I would’ve understood it had Roth included a sprinkling of girl-on-girl kissing/sex scene (after the explosive popularity of soft-core lesbian porn drama The L Word, how could the marketing strategists have missed THAT???)…but nada. I wouldn’t even get into the East European stereotype faux pas…but all that lesbian “hinting�…What the hell was the POINT? Shall we look into the Freudian phobia men secretly harbor for the general lesbian population? That all gay gals have penis envy? Note to Eli Roth: Not all lesbians secretly want to cut off your dick!

For the record, though, I am completely fine with the gratuitous violence and nudity. Duh, a steak for a poster? Obviously not for Babe fans. Eli Roth does splatter movies justice, sure. The puzzle was the attempt at “female empowerment� in the hands of a pretty, young heiress aka latent lesbian castrating sociopath. Completely unnecessary and a bit…puzzling. Would it be too unacceptable that a STRAIGHT girl does the heinous amputation? What am I missing here?

It is nice to see that rather than just simply upping the body count for a horror sequel, Eli Roth actually decided to explore the lives of the villains more.

Unfortunately, he focused on their lives too much, and things got boring....suprisingly quickly. It was the best part of 50 minutes before any real tension started to build in the film, and when you're dealing with a rather thin plot line, that's a hell of a long time.

The other thing is....do you really want to know more about the lives of people who consider it "manly" to kill innocent people?.....I know I don't.

And also, once again, it really isn't as gory and sick as it thinks it is....the gore sequences in "Saw 3" are a heckload harder to watch. That scene with the woman who wanted to bathe in the blood of her victim was just bizarre.

So overall, more intelligent and more original than other horror movies of the last few years, but it's just too slow to hold the audience's attention.

Hostel II is like a godsend. The first part thrived on deranged minds like us. It flourished because of all the people that wanted to see gore and nothing more. Any bright mind would directly know that a second part would be just as, or even more succesful if there was more of the good present. Meaning more violence, and everything God prohibited.


Instead we get more nudity. And not even good nudity. If I'd wanted nudity I'd go watch porn, not a horror movie. That said, it took ages for the main characters to be kidnapped. Woah, here comes the good part, is what I thought.

But no, all you see (or better yet, all you're not seeing) is censored violence. People stepping right in front of the carnage, leaving you only the occasional 'result', but most of the time you have to let your imagination fill in the blanks. That's what I do in my pasttime, it's not why I watch a movie.


Awful. Wouldn't even rent this if I were you.

Ok so now we have all seen the first movie and we know that this is the sequel. We are ready for it..This movie does something that most sequels do not. It actually clears up the ending of the first one then moves on to another story. This movie is basically the first movie except this time its women. You get to see more behind the scenes of the hostel and how they do what they do. A few of the actors from the first movie are in this movie. Again this movie does not paint a pretty picture for people who are touring europe. The set up is almost the say as the original with a few tweeks here and there. Yes the gore is here but not as bad as the original. Actually I did not think the original was not so gory so this one is right in line with that one. The acting is ok as is the plot. The ending has a few twists to it that actually keeps you intrigued with the movie till the ending. What this movie really bowls down to is the suspense of when and where the ladies will be taken so that they can be given to the people who bought them. The movie goes into how the women are actually purchased and such. This is a pretty decent movie with the gore being over the top. When there is gore.. there is GORE. The movie tends to over-intensify the blood and guts. I like the twists at the end of the movie. This is a solid viewing if you are a fan of this movie or this genre. If not wait for it to come out on dvd.

The first Hostel was gruesome, sickening and disgusting. Yet I enjoyed it's superb craftsmanship and surprisingly good charecters. It's pretty much the same thing here, except with more plot. Hostel 2 goes in-depth with the whole technical aspect of the torture business; We see how the clients buy their victims, how they are treated upon arrival to Slovakia, and also some rules of the torturer alliance are explained. And instead of using the directorial trick Roth used in the first film, to make us believe we're watching a comedy for the first 50 minutes and then punch us in the face by showing a severed head, here he starts off with that severed head-type of feeling. We still do get a lengthy set-up involving a group of vixens partying and talking. Thank god for the fact that Roth didn't go the Tarantino way and make them talk about popular culture. Instead they just talk **** about their friends, just like in real life. And Roth is a good dialogue writer otherwise too, all the dialogue we get here feels spot-on and something that actual human beings might say. When it comes to the torturing scenes, I won't spoil anything. They are extremely creative, but besides a little scene around the end, they're almost goreless. In a movie like this you would expect a whole lot more of torture and such. But on the other hand two side characters, two torturers to be exact, are shown having some very interesting ethical conflicts with each other, and the transformation they both undergo as humans is rather interesting to see. The performances are also rather nice. All the women are hot as hell, except for the have-to nerdy kid with the gigantic gums and teeth. We ALMOST get some HLA, but it turns out to be Roth teasing the living shit out of us. I don't like that too much, but there still is a rather large amount of nudity here to please... Well, just about anyone. The technical side is magnificent here, sporting truly disgusting special effects just like the previous movie. The score should also be noted to be great, even managing to add some drama into a scene that would contain none whatsoever withou the music, but the music still doesn't steal the attention away from the movie itself, which really is a rather interesting thing. That's exactly what movie scores should be like. The problem here is that besides the two torturers we never really go above the good movie-level. It's good all right, but Hostel Part II never really manages to rise above that level into greatness. Nonetheless, I doubt that we will ever get a better movie in the torture-genre than this. But do you really want to see people get tortured for 30 minutes, and an hour of partying? If you can take it, Hostel: Part II is definately worth seeing. Otherwise, don't bother.
