Because there are some men that I like in the story. But they are few and far apart.
And it makes me cry when I know women have gone through this, and still does. It just breaks my heart.
So to all the fathers out there. See this film and don't act like Josey's father. Be the father he is in the end.
Protect the women around you, and beat the crap out of them that don't.

i live where this film takes place, and i have to say, sadly, that this film is very true. the Iron Range of Minnesota is not a friendly place. not much, if anything, has changed since the time this movie is set in. the Range is awful. i hear f***, f*** you, f*** this... every day in my school. guys make sexual gestures toward me and other people. it is really nasty. people push you out of the way. it is awful. "North Country" perfectly protrays the Iron Range.

We often times forget that the world can be a cruel and unforgiving place. North Country does not let us forget. Although this story's main plot involves the harassment of Josey Aimes and her fellow female co-workers when they go to work at an ore mine. It's really about Josey's life and her struggle to keep her family together in the face of unrelenting overwhelming difficulties. Troubled son, estranged husband, sick friend. Even with those she's got hope.
Charlize Theron manages to keep all of those different human aspects alive, giving us a very realistic character from which to view her struggles. It must be hard in those small towns to be an outsider with vision and the will to change the status quo.
Woody Harrelson as the love interest, although, not a complete love interest as it never really pans out that way, is a good choice. It is nice to see him get a role with a little depth to it (not much but at least some).
But the star of this little play is Frances McDormand, who gives her character so much warmth and passion that she steals the scene when present.
Nice, warm, touching movie about the struggle for equality, both at work and at home.

I really can't imagine that things would ever be this bad for a female working with a bunch of males. Anyhow, I guess it is based on a true story so it is what it is. Chalize Theron did a stellar job in the lead role.
