So, to the film. December Boys was directed by Rod Hardy and adapted from the novel of the same name by Michael Noonan. This film is set in the 60’s and is basically a coming of age picture for the four main characters, who are orphan boys from a Catholic orphanage. It follows them on a vacation to a beach-side ‘village’ (I use that term loosely) and their adventures that occur during their stay.

During their stay the boys encounter a newlywed couple who are looking to adopt a child and, for the three younger boys, their holiday becomes a contest to be the one chosen for adoption. The only one who is not interested is Daniel’s character, Mapps, who doesn’t want to be adopted, and instead spends his time exploring where he meets Lucy. Together they fall as in love as you can at 16, and their romance adds a lovely dimension to the film.

The movie has a beautiful pace and feel to it. It is shot in the most unique cove in Australia, and the photography is amazing. The story does not rush ahead, or overwhelm you with information, instead it follows along at an almost dreamy pace and tells you just enough of what is happening to help you follow along.

I just loved this film, I thought the acting was sensational. Daniel Radcliffe had to learn an Australian accent for the movie and, as an Aussie, I think that he did a fantastic job. I thought the relationship between his character and Lucy was very realistic and handled beautifully by the director.

So, if you hadn’t considered seeing this movie, I would take the time. It has some timeless messages in it that are worth watching for, and is just a lovely way to spend a coupe of hours.
