This film takes place when stars were free spirits and we not controlled by the media. Barbra Streisand plays Esther Hoffman, a home town singer who gets discovered at a local bar by Kris Kristofferson John Norman Howard, who plays a popular singer in his time. He finds Esther fasinating and irrisistable. He follows her to get to know her better. After he does she falls in love with him as much as he is with her. He teaches her the ways of the music industry. He introduces her to the right people and makes the right contacts. Soon her career takes off. While John Norman's is going downhill. Not handling this well John Norman puts his thoughts and efforts in building them a house in the country. Esther is involved with all the glitz of a music star. Soon everybody was clamering for Ester and no longer looking for John Howard. As her career soars she asks John to join her on tour. He is offended by this. He and Ester get into a fight and he takes off in his car drinking as has become a habit of his. He puts his car in high speed and just goes. We next see Ester laying over John Normans body as she weeps. She is angry at him at first. One because he left her by death, two because she is afraid to be alone. Ester learns that she has to rely on herself to make it through the day.The ending shows how Ester coped with John's death.
