If I were to pick a single film to define "art movie," this would be it, without question. Stellar use of light & shadow, surpassing even "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" -- not as bizarrely disjointed, but equally effective in framing the mood. The chemistry & tension of the characters of Daniel Auteuil (knife-thrower) Vanessa Paradis (the target) is perfectly crafted -- taut & well-played, as is the perennial poor judgement in men of Adele as played by Paradis. If you have room in your collection for only one film to represent the French art genre, make it this one. You will NOT be disappointed.
