Touching story set during WWII. I love how this gives a different side to the typical war movie and shows the soldiers as characters and their lives after the fighting. Great, touching movie.

Flags of Our Fathers is Clint Eastwood's WWII drama about the struggles of loss, heroism and money in the era of the "greatest generation." And before I start, let's face it: ever since Million Dollar Baby Eastwood couldn't make a bad movie if he wanted to, and this film definitely meets his high standard.
It is the story of the last three living soldiers of the six who got their picture taken raising the replacement victory flag at Iwo Jima (the original was taken down and given to a politician). Eastwood uses some really interesting framing to alternate between these men at the battle and in America where they become big heroes and are hired to encourage the purchase of war bonds. However, these characters are very multi-dimensional and none of the three actually considers them self a hero at all.
These guys pull off a great, natural feeling acting job that really holds the film well. Also, a strong visual contrast is shown between the colorful USA and the washed out, sepia/grayscale battlefield that is full of gruesome carnage. It works well as a companion to Iwo Jima (as intended), and even when Eastwood tries way too hard to pull off a Spielberg equivalent he still does a great job and avoids the cliche's that you might expect to find here. It's just too bad that it is only an arm's length away from being a blow-your-mind American classic.

I thought the movie was great! It was heart warming and touching too. All the actors acted perfectly, the story was simple and good, the war scenes were the best, the last 15 to 20 minutes could have been edited, they could have made it 10 minutes or so, it seemed that the movie was very long if you know what I mean, but it was a very good movie though, good for everyone to watch!

Flags of Our Fathers is a heartwarming Movie, with several tear jerking parts. But the movie itself conveyed more emotion than just tear-jerking, show stopping moments. It also proved to be grotesque, and very violent. I kind of think it pulled emotions around too much though (hence 4.5 stars instead of 5). For about five minutes, I was at the point of crying. But next thing I knew, I was wanting to puke because of the violence involved. The movie was graphic to the point of throwing up. Organs, blood, pale faced dead men, you name it, it was in it. It was a very enjoyable movie, you felt in tune with the movie, like you knew what was going to happen. The story takes place, if you haven't already guessed it, on Iwo Jima, Sulfur Island in English. But it goes back and forward in time, while the men on tour for putting the flag up on Iwo Jima are having flashbacks. But that's all i'm gonna say so I don't give anything away.
Overall it was a brilliant movie, and I would strongly recommend it, if you have a strong stomach.

Flags of Our Fathers is a movie with its heart in the right place, the problem is that the film relies on feeling for these characters, and I found myself maybe caring about one of them a tiny bit. The story jumps back and forth between three time periods: the war, coming home from the war, and present time. All of the parts shown in present time really don't develop the story, they just set up a bizarre technique that does nothing but add 20 extra minutes to a movie that already feels like it has been going on forever.
All in all, I say this movie is a rent. Even if you really like it, I don't think you'll be watching it more than a few times.

This film by Clint Eastwood is the best historical-war event movie that I've ever seen. It tells the story of Iwa Jima. The movie is really good and it looks so real I almost vomited at this one seen. Other than that I liked it.

Clint Eastwood, director of such great films as Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven, and Mystic River, returns to the big screen with Flags of Our Fathers, the American release of his ambitious Iwo Jima Saga. Even though Flags of Our Father is set in World War 2 and features huge battle scenes from the Battle of Iwo Jima, this isn't your typical war movie. The main focus of the movie involves the raising of the American flag on Mt. Suribashi, and the famous photograph shot. As said before, the film has a rather large war scene, and the other part of the movie follows the surviving soldiers who placed the flag and how they've been made into heroes to help sell bonds. Not really featuring a well-known cast, the acting is very good and of course Eastwood's direction is flawless. For people who love war movies, you might be turned away a little bit as even though there is a massive war scene, it's not like those seen in other war movies such as Midway and Saving Private Ryan. Overall, this is a great movie, not one of Eastwood's best, but still very good.

Flags of Our Fathers is yet again, another film depicting the events of World War II. However, the story tells the events surrounding the violent Battle of Iowa Jima and the power of the extremely famous flag raising photograph that captured the hearts of America. If there is one thing you can say about this film is that it was incorrectly marketed. I think a lot of people were expecting a huge epic scaled war film, such as Saving Private Ryan, however it doesn't stray too far from the blue print that film laid out. Instead, Flags of Our Fathers depicts the battle and also the propaganda of the photograph that the American government utilized in order to fund the war effort. Clint Eastwood is a very talented director, though not always known for that until recently. The acting is very good in the film, especially by Adam Beach and Ryan Phillippe. The action is very intense, gory, realistic and gritty and that's a good thing. And the propaganda aspect in very intriguing as well, for a certain amount of time. After a while, you realize that America tried to milk every cent out of its citizens to fund the war, but after countless speeches and memorial services, you get it and then it becomes too much. And the story goes back and forth between the battle and the aftermath, and the story telling becomes a bit scattered, where the more interesting story is on the island. Also, the film goes on a bit too long and the musical score is pretty bad. Also, there is this narrative done some what similar to what happens in Amadeus with the interviewer talking to one of the surviving soldiers and this shows up briefly from time to time but then it goes full force at the very end and this screws up the pacing of the film and it seems unneeded. In conclusion, Flags of our Fathers is a good WWII film, but if you want to see a WWII masterpiece, watch Saving Private Ryan.
