Around about a year and half ago I'd never thought about watching foreign films because I was lazy and didn't like subtitles. Then, I studied City of God for my Film Studies class last year in school and was blown away by how good it is. It does have a certain MTV style film, and doesn't really feel like one that would usually be made in Brazil - its more hollywood like, but with a complex non-linear story which I love about this film. The characters are all fantastic and brilliantly played by all the young kids that they used, but its mainly how the story is told which makes this movie outstanding. Its a very classy film and one that turned me onto foreign cinema. it looks spectacular and flies by like my writing deadlines. Absolutely awesome film.

City Of God was a positive suprise for me. It as a realy good movie, and one of the best movies i´ve seen in a long time. The directing is original and very very good sometimes. The writing is allso realy good, it mixes crime, love, and allso some humor. The acting was brilliant, the characters feel very real and they are just overall very well acted. Is there anything more to say about City Of God? The story is about the city more than any specific character, if one it would be the young boy who wants to be a photographer, but ends up ine this mess. The movie becomes a massacre at the end, and you are stunned after watching it. It makes you think, it shocks you, It even makes you laugh, City Of God is a masterpiece.

This could be the best foreign language film ever. The acting is incredible, the story is phenomenal and unique, it's a film that could only be told in Brazil, if it's told anywhere else it would have ruined everything. Fernando Meirelles does an unbelievable job of directing, the film is quite simply gorgeous. Every frame is a masterpiece, from the bonds of friendship and family, to the gritty death of accomplices, City of God, is a force that not many other films can hold a candle to. It's the best foreign language film ever, and ranks among the greats of all-time greatest in film. Go out of your way to see this movie, and you will not be disappointed.
