This movie starts out as a comedy or so it feels. Perhaps it never was. Perhaps the intention is a dark comedy? The story is simple: Boy and girl live in the big city selling things they've stolen. They seem happy in their own crazy lives. Then suddenly he starts beating her and the story turns a corner. The dark comedy of it slips away and all the old trappings of predictability surface. Does she find help? Does she fight the guy? Milla Jovavich is very good and her dark character is probably the best part, although it is written so clearly that there is nothing to shock or surprise. The ending is obvious. The jaded inner city phoniness masquerading as love is almost pathetic.

There are even a few times where the characters talk directly into the camera, giving what appears to be an interview. It's lame and was done better in To Die For...which in a weird was this movie is really just copying. It is only the acting that makes this movie watchable, as the beatings are brutal and make my stomach turn even from the safety of my office, far from the little screen and the brutal fists and feet. This is not a date movie. It's sad commentary on the comical truth of this world. I thought this thing was going to be funny, but it was dark and sad and left me withered after the viewing.
