Once in a while a film comes along that really explores more than it's subject matter. In the case of Candy, the plot about love and drug use is completely obvious, but the underlining theme "Heaven, Earth, Hell" and the eventuality of love. There is an deep current in this plot and it's subtle play is delicate and fragile at times, but it maintains itself until the inevitable conclusion. The acting is authentic and at points so painfully real I wanted to scream that the screen seeing the struggle and deep confusion. Geoffrey Rush's character is almost pointless, but his superb acting and interplay overshadows the characters reason for even being in the film.
Heath and Abbie's chemistry feels authentic and you can struggle right along with them as their relationship struggles under the weight of their addictions.
This is a good solid film and a sign that Australia is in the market for making movies with meaning and heart.
