A tale of possession and the subsequent complications of the exorcism, told, as a lot of modern tales are told, in a courtroom with interleaving flashbacks.
The story itself is pretty typical, the only twist is that the prosecution is claiming that Emily Rose (played by Jennifer Carpenter) was not in fact possessed, but epileptic. Thus parts of the story are veiled as seizures. This makes the underlying theme of this movie about the concepts of Faith. Although too much is exposed for us as 'fact' in the interplay between Laura Linney (The attorney for the defense) and Tom Wilkinson (the Priest) leaving almost no imaginative conclusions to the possibility that either side was right. This is the plots biggest issue: to much is resolved and not enough is left the imagination. This is suppose to be dark suspenseful thriller in the end it becomes a court room drama, with only hints of more important meaning.
The acting is top notch, thanks in part to Tom Wilkinson, but this isn't to side shoe the rest of the cast. Jennifer Carpenter is convincing and leaves one feeling like a struggle for sanity / god is hard road. Campbell Scott is clean and direct, this seems to be the kind of parts he gets. That's too bad as I feel he has a much wider range and would like to see it taken advantage of as it was in the Dying Gaul.
The direction and special effects are good, at times bordering on bizarre and freaky, which for this genre is exactly what is needed and does not detract from the overall impression of the film.
A courtroom version of a much more famous movie.

If you are at all a fan of the exorcist movies of which i am then you will find this movie a decent atempt which didn't fail but just didnt quite work out ,franly I think because all the courts scenes made it hard to sit through but the exorcism...

If you are at all a fan of the exorcist movies of which i am then you will find this movie a decent atempt which didn't fail but just didnt quite work out ,franly I think because all the courts scenes made it hard to sit through but the exorcism and the way she gets possessed it just awsome and thats what makes the movie 3 stars so if you want a decent movie that will creep you out then watch this one
