The Proposition is, quite simply, one of the best westerns I have ever seen. It's up there with the Peckinpahs or Eastwoods of the genre. The plot of this film is pretty simple, yet incredibly well-done. The main character has to kill his psychotic older brother in 9 days or else his younger brother will get the noose. There are no shortages of brilliant moments. I was a big fan of the ambiguous ending. That may be because I'm a fan of those kinds of endings, but still.

As well written as this is, though, it simply would not have been nearly as effective were it not for the brilliant acting here. Everyone pulls out a great performance. I mean it, too. I could not think of a single actor who felt out of place. Just a hint of warning, though. If you're squeamish, don't see this movie. It doesn't have too much violence, but what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. I can handle lots of gore, but I found the flogging scene incredibly difficult to watch. If you can cope with this, you'll find an amazing film that is among the best in it's class.
