Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) has been training and managing many great boxers for many years. However after a painful estrangement from his daughter, Frankie has been unwilling to let himself get close to anyone for a very long time. For the past 23 years, he has been attending mass, asking for forgiveness for something that still haunts him. Then Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) shows up in his gym. She has a tremendous focus of will and is going to do anything to accomplish her goals, but she wants someone to believe in her. Frankie doesn't want this kind of responsibility and tells her that she's too old and he doesn't train girls. But after Maggie wears herself out at the gym day after day, Frankie finally gives in. Soon, both will find a sense of family in each other that they haven't felt for a long time and "a common spirit that transcends the pain and loss of their pasts. Eddie Dupris (Morgan Freeman), the gym's custodian and Frankie's close friend, narrates the story.
