Louison is an out-of-work clown, who arrives one day in a post apocalyptic French town in the middle of nowhere, seeking work in exchange for room and board. He finds a job as a handyman in an apartment building above a butcher's shop, which houses a selection of rather odd tenants, including the toy-making Cube brothers, Aurore Interligator who hears voices urging her to commit suicide, and Mr Potin who is committed entirely to the breeding of escargot (which he dines upon) in his flooded apartment. Food is in short supply and is used as currency but, unbeknown to Louison, Clapet the butcher has a meat supply all of his own: The free lodgings are just a ruse to entice people in and his handy men never seem to last very long… Louison is next on the menu. However Clapet's shy, bespectacled daughter Julie falls in love with Louison and is determined to save him from his fate; but to do so she must make a deal with the Trogolodists, the vegetarian terrorists that live in the sewers.
