After seeing the preview of Dear Frankie, from another movie that I rented I wanted to see it, so I went to Barns & Noble and bought it. I made a wise choice in buying this movie---very good in the sad department but at the same time in the romantic department as well. I would have to agree on one of the things that i like about this movie is that The director did a great job on picking Gerard Butler as The Stranger. He plays and makes a very convincing stranger in this movie. I love this movie because it shows that no matter happens in your life its the little things that matter most to you like love and protecting the ones that are close to you. We first see Frankie and his mom Lizzie moving to a seaside town--we learn the reason for moving is to protect Frankie from knowing the truth that they are running from his father. We also learn that he is deaf after seeing him sign to his mother. So she makes up a make-believe story that his father is out at sea on HMS Accra. She writes letters every few weeks, that are sea adventures of exotic places, and exotic stamps from his father. Frankie tracks the ship on his map of the world and learns that it will be in his hometown the next night. When the actual real HMS Accra actually comes and docks in the port, she now realizes that she has to choose between telling him the truth or finding the perfect stranger; with no history, past, or future; to be his dad for one day. We see Lizzie waiting to meet the stranger. He (Gerard) comes to meet her and she hires him to be Frankie's dad for one day and by the end of that day you can really see that he has grown attached to Frankie. Watching this movie was really moving and touching and it made it all the more moving when the stranger asks why the dad left her and her son. After you've learned what really happened, then you realize that you are deeply moved and as you keep watching you see the look on Gerry's face when she tells him. That makes you even more deeply moved. Bring on the tears and the kleenex box. I thought that was the most sad part of this movie--actually all of it is sad and romantic, but that scene hits you hard. I thought that Gerard, as the stranger, was really perfect for this movie. I agree with LIVE2CREATE, with the end they let you imagine that the stranger and Lizzie got together in one way or another. I thought it was cute how Frankie was trying to get his mom and the stranger together by putting them in ackward situations. I also love how the end was played out and left it up to your imagination that they did get together. This movie is in one of my Top Ten favorite movies. Trust me if you like Gerard in Phantom of The Opera, you are going to like him in this movie. To anyone who hasn't seen this movie---I HIGHLY RECOMEND THAT YOU SEE IT!!!!
