Lewis (Burt Reynolds) convinces three of his friends to accompany him on a canoe trip down a stretch of the Cahulawasse River in Georgia, which is part of a wilderness area soon to be destroyed by a new dam project. The trip becomes a pure nightmare, filled with misadventure, death, suspicion, and most of all, questions about the true nature--and instincts--of the human being.
