"'Cannibal Holocaust' is pure horror brilliance."

What surprised me more than this film's almost unbearably disturbing, sickening graphic violence and real animal violence was how incredibly brilliant it is. 'Cannibal Holocaust' is one of the best horror movies ever made - a film that's only let down is its animal cruelty, which isn't acceptable as entertainment - shock-value or otherwise although it was made in an extremely irresponsible time and place for movies.

The film combines fantastic cinematography and scenery with some of the best and most effective music I've ever heard in a horror film. It's a film made with real knowledge and a true passion for cinema. So much effort was put into it that outright banning it and making it a video nasty, while technically the best choice to make, is really disrespectful to the film and everyone involved because a film like this is not only incredibly hard to make under any circumstances, but movies like these will never, ever be made again. This is most certainly not a film for everyone, the disturbing graphic violence is just too much for some people to stomach, but if you're up for it, do yourself a favour and check it out. It's not joyless, soulless, pointless exploitation, it's exploitation with a point, and one of the greatest horror satires ever made.

If you have ever heard anything about this movie then you that this movie was banned all over the place. The movie plays itself off as a documentary with a gory ending. First off the gore is not as bad as they say it is. Compared to movies like saw and hostel this movie is actually pretty tame. I think part of what makes this movie so weird that there are some ACTUAL killings in this movie. The animals in this movie was actually killed on film. That is where all of the controversy came from in this movie. The director actually films the killings of at least 6 animals. The first half of the story follows an explorer that is sent into the jungle to retreave the footage taken by a missing team. The team was filming a documentary about 2 warring tribes and they never returned. The second half of the film follows the explorer reviewing the found film. The footage is very much in the vein of the blair witch project. Blair witch actually copies this style. You see the team being abusive to the tribe members until the tribe finally has enough. Yes the violence is over the top with the killings being over the top. The acting in this movie is ok with the special effects being well for its time. I think the only reason why someone would actually watch this movie is due to wanting to see what all the hype is about.
