Roland West, director of the 1926 silent mystery, The Bat, recreates a classic in the movie's first talkative remake. A hooded killer is committing robberies and baffling the police, leaving his calling card as the only clue. At his last murder of Mister Bell, and the robbery of his Rossmore necklace, his card informs the police he's heading out to the country. In Oakdale, Cornelia Van Gorder and her maid, Lizzie Allen have rented a house for the summer, but are met with problems during their entire stay, as someone makes it clear they want them to clear out. Meanwhile, Brook Bailey, the cashier of a bank, robbed of half a million dollars, is wanted for the robbery, and hiding out in the house as Cornelia's new gardener, hired by her niece Gale. Lieutenant Anderson arrives at the house, determined to prove that her landlord, Richard Fleming, is the Bat, murder and mystery surround them, as a mysterious drifter, found in the garage, beaten and seemingly mute, continues to roam around the house, until Anderson steps out of sight, and he reveals his real reason for being at the house. Based on the novel by Mary Rinehart, The Bat Whispers is a true classic.
