The original and still my favorite version (but just barely), though Steve Martin turned in a good performance echoing updated versions of Tracy's narration. I do admit that Liz Taylor as a bobby-soxer is a bit old, too sophisticated, and stunningly beautiful for her role (she may have been better fit a scant two years after "National Velvet").

Minnelli directs a nice social commentary here, good for its time and frankly, its a compliment that the Martin/Keaton remake follows in its footsteps. My favorite scene is the meeting with the groom's parents, Billie Burke is her usual prissy self and Tracy gets his hat handed to him despite his intention of getting the upper hand. Nice and subtle. Its actually quite interesting to see that the caterer in this version is VERY similar to the Martin Short "wedding planner" of the re-make. Its very startling to see that this movie's dialog was used so much again. But, in contrast, the final theme here is "Goodnight, Sweetheart" a big favorite of mine.

All-in-all, I give this movie slight extra props for doing it first.
