I came into this movie not expecting much from this movie considering what the synopsis was for this movie along with the fact that I dispise rap music. But I have to fully admit, I was completely wrong. Yes, there are some instances where the rap music does seem to get on my nerve but that was only the thing that really bothered me about the movie. This movie has a very gritty feeling to it with the run down house that DJ lives in, the job locations for where he drives his prostitute around to, and where everybody else works that lives in his house. However, DJ strikes upon some luck when he comes across his Anthony Anderson's character named Key, DJ finally strikes some hope into his life. After many attempts at trying to create the sound and feel that DJ is searching for, he finally strikes gold. The soul searching for music that DJ follows is quite captivating. However, there are some hard scenes to watch of abuse with the household that are painfully realistic. The best part of the movie is when DJ comes to Nola and says that she's in charge, that alone is truly inspiring and has incredible strength. This is a powerful movie with a good message that is undertoned with the gritty feel to the life that DJ lives, that is brought to life and is believable and incredible captivating made possible by great writing, direction and performances.
