This is the first time I've seen an art film in a theatre and I was hoping it would be a great experience; well that goal was never met. Jim Jarmusch's COFFEE AND CIGARETTES is a series of vignettes shot over a 17 year period by the director that's based mostly in coffee shops while the people were smoking cigarettes hence the name of the film. At a running time of 96 minutes this film just dragged on and on and in my head I was just wishing this pain of watching this film would end soon, I even fell asleep at times during the film with my sunglasses on and I was not the only one. Yes I am not recommending this film however this isn’t the type of film I would normally watch so maybe if you’re into these kind of films I’m most certain you’ll like it. For all the negative content I have said about this film there are some positives. The vignettes involving RZA, GZA and Bill Murray as well as two Old Italian guys cussing each other out about coffee and cigarettes were somewhat funny but not funny enough. Jim Jarmusch is a good director; I really liked DEAD MAN with Johnny Depp and GHOST DOG: WAY OF THE SAMURAI with Forest Whitaker because those were very offbeat and different films in genera with really cool Zen-like lead characters. COFFEE AND CIGARETTES is an offbeat film but this time, it goes too far off into a world of bland and is pretty much Jim Jarmusch's celebrity friends making a home video that they can look back on, too bad the audience can't enjoy it as much.
