I watch this and I think that Speilberg must have just seen a Mel Brooks and a Jon Landis movie and decided that was the trend he needed to follow. I quite enjoyed it, but not for the reason that Steve intended I imagine.

I watch this and I think that Speilberg must have just seen a Mel Brooks and a Jon Landis movie and decided that was the trend he needed to follow. I quite enjoyed it, but not for the reason that Steve intended I imagine.

The movie begins with a parody of Spielberg's own film ("how delightfully arrogant"), moves to two "frat boys" acting silly, a poorly done bar-room brawl and then Jon Belushi acts crazy (not in the funny way but the genuinely delusilonal way). It was funny because the jokes were bad copies of Mel Brooks' jokes and I wonder how people actually missed that. The cast was, as previously mentioned, a sad callback to Landis's "Animal House" and set up future Jon Candy appearances in Landis films.

The movie was also intended to be accurate to the actualy time period, so as a result many of the anachronistic jokes were either bad (the trucker with a desktop radio in his passenger seat, recovered only by Slim Pickens' portrayal) or just plain offensive (Jon Candy being racist, but in a schticky way).

I will have to watch it again to be sure if I'm not just imagining how bad it is. I actually like it though, despite all that. I probably had more fun watching it because of all those things I pointed out. I had fun tearing it apart.
