It's been a while since we've seen Micheal Keaton in anything except for I think romantic comedies. It's kind of nice to see him again.
First of all, the previews for White Noise make you think this movie is more of a horror flick than it really is. Yes it has horror to it, but the core of the story is actually very emotional.
Keaton plays a very successful architecht who is married to a successful author. He has a son from his first wife and has his life in complete control as he and his new wife are very much in love. Sadly, she is killed in a car accident and Keaton doesn't take it very well. After mourning several months and moving into a new home to try to get on with his life, he is approached by a man who is able to tune into the messages the dead are giving to us by looking at and listening to TV and radio static, hence the title of the movie.
At first Keaton dismisses this stranger as a kook, but eventually he can take it no longer and contacts the man. Before long he becomes obsessed with finding his own messages by recording all the static he can and watching it endlessly, neglecting his son in the process while consuming his life.
It is refreshing to see a movie utilize white static as a suspense device, as I'm sure all of you still have creepy images of Poltergiest burned in your brains as I do. While it is not as horror skewed as I expected, there are several good jumpy moments. Keaton plays his emotional part well, maintaining a strong and totured character at the same time. The plot is fed nicely, as you are always curious what is going to happen next and your remain concerned about the main characters. Unfortunately, the ending is somewhat disappointing and not quite as climactic as I was hoping for.
There are a lot of horror movies coming out right now, and while I don't think this is the best, it is a worthy addition to the genre.

EVP is a reality and there are people who do research on it. BUT this film takes the phenomenon and pushes it to a limit. I own the film and have watched only once. A bit predictable at first it spirals in to a mish mash of vignettes that come apart at the end. A bit slow in places but as an entertaining film it's ok.
