Lenny is a ten-year-old girl living in Lahore on the eve of India's independence and consequent partition into two countries: India and Pakistan. Lenny's family is Parsee and enjoys a neutral status among Lahore residents. Lenny's nanny, Shanta, is Hindu but is courted by both Muslim and Hindu men. Two Muslim men, Hasan and Dil Navez are particularly favored by her. However, the increased violence among Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus shatters the peaceful lives of all of the characters.
