One of those movies that only Jimmy Stewart can pull off, it is very well made with a number of intrigues that keep the audience engaged. It also has nice pacing, introducing a hopeless political appointee, following him through a drama, an apparent defeat, and an ultimate vindication.

Though slightly saccharine and simplistic, there are political lessons to be learned here that still hold up today - the clash of special interests and corruption, the difficulty in one person being effective in government, and a fillibuster that is actually entertaining to watch rather than frustrating.

You're not going to fully understand the machinations of Congress after watching "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" - but you might understand gridlock and personal ambitions of the "players" in some degree.
