The viewer should, of course, be warned that the history here is horrendous - compressed and distorted with motivations twisted and fabricated. In some cases, this is obviously for flow, though Lewis and Clark as real people were complicated and fascinating individuals. They do not need this movie's devices of romantic competition, simplistic Native double-crosses, made-up alliances, and a completely fictitious love story.

The film is paced fairly well, though it skips quickly to the story of Sacagawea (Donna Reed in fake-looking coppertone makeup). MacMurray and Heston do not synch well together, despite the story-telling to separate their characters and give them personality. About the time a viewer sees four minutes devoted to a love-struck Donna Reed running after Heston's canoe, he or she might realize that this fiction isn't about "the far horizons" at all.
