I more or less like this movie in a way I like "M*A*S*H", it presents an irreverent look at war with the serious issues mixed in with a comedic contempt for them. Coburn is very good and James Garner seems almost destined to head for the "Rockford Files" where he could again (as in this movie and "Maverick") play a decent fellow who wants to avoid trouble at all costs.

Julie Andrews (in her earliest role) is given less to do, and while she is turned to an "American" view as espoused by this film, there is not a lot of meat for her character other than representing an idyllic idea of heroism.

The film does stride a lot of worlds of movie making - black comedy, the sex references of the 60s as applied to an earlier war, some slightly-too-heavy monologues that aren't really necessary - but it does a decent job of it.
